Complications of pulmonary embolism include the following:

  • Sudden cardiac death

  • Obstructive shock

  • Pulseless electrical activity

  • Atrial or ventricular arrhythmias

  • Secondary pulmonary arterial hypertension

  • Cor pulmonale

  • Severe hypoxemia

  • Right-to-left intracardiac shunt

  • Lung infarction

  • Pleural effusion

  • Paradoxical embolism

  • Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

  • Thrombophlebitis
