Physical examination findings are quite variable in pulmonary embolism and, for convenience, may be grouped into four categories as follows:

  • Massive pulmonary embolism

  • Acute pulmonary infarction

  • Acute embolism without infarction

  • Multiple pulmonary emboli or thrombi
