Acute medical illnesses associated with the development of pulmonary embolism include the following:

  • AIDS (lupus anticoagulant)

  • Behçet disease

  • Congestive heart failure (CHF)

  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)

  • Polycythemia

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus

  • Ulcerative colitis
