During physical examination, the patient may also display the following:

  • Tachypnea and/or dyspnea

  • Tachycardia or bradycardia

  • Wheezing

  • Rhonchi

  • Rales

  • Sternal or intercostal retractions

  • Dullness to percussion

  • Decreased breath sounds

  • Pleurisy

  • Pleural friction rub

  • Cyanosis

  • Rash

  • Acute respiratory distress
