The sensitivity of cytology is not highly related to the volume of pleural fluid tested. Sending more than 50-60 mL of pleural fluid for cytology does not increase the yield of direct cytospin analysis, [32, 33] and volumes of approximately 150 mL are sufficient when both cytospin and cell block preparations are analyzed. [33]
