Acceptable choices for the outpatient who is mild to moderately ill include any of the following:

  • Amoxicillin

  • Tetracycline

  • Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

  • A newer macrolide (eg, azithromycin [6] or clarithromycin [7, 8] )

  • A second-generation cephalosporin

  • A fluoroquinolone
