Answer

The limited efficacy of current therapeutic options for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) has prompted research into alternative approaches. Therapy modalities under investigation include the following [8] :

  • Targeted molecular therapies
  • Immunotherapy (eg, vaccines, checkpoint inhibitors, oncolytic viruses) [111]
  • Nanomedicines that can cross the blood-brain barrier [112]
  • Stem cells [113]
  • Cannabinoids [114]
  • Ketogenic diet [115]

Genotyping of brain tumors may have applications in stratifying patients for clinical trials of various novel therapies. In about 50% of patients with glionas, circulating tumor DNA can be sequenced from cerebrospinal fluid, allowing genotyping of the tumor without the need for brain re-biopsy. [116]
