If a lobectomy is performed, completion of the thyroidectomy is recommended for any of the following [8] :

  • Tumor >4 cm in diameter
  • Positive margins
  • Extrathyroidal extension
  • Macroscopic multifocal disease
  • Macroscopic nodal metastases
  • Confirmed contralateral disease
  • Vascular invasion
