In a study of 39,562 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma from the National Cancer Data Base, risk factors for central lymph node metastasis included the following [32] :

  • Age ≤45 years
  • Male sex
  • Asian race
  • Tumor >1 cm

A family history of papillary thyroid carcinoma is an independent risk factor for disease recurrence in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. [33]
