Answer

Two major staging systems are commonly used in gastric cancer, as follows:

  • The tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) system, developed by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) [28]

  • The Japanese Research Society staging, based on where the lymph nodes with cancer are located in the stomach. [73]

Both the NCCN and ESMO use the TNM system for staging. [4, 70] For further information, see Gastric Cancer Staging.
