What is the role of L-arginine and antioxidant vitamins in the prevention of eclampsia?

A study by Vadillo-Ortega et al suggests that in a high-risk population (eg, previous pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia, preeclampsia in a first-degree relative), supplementation during pregnancy with a special food (eg, bars) containing L-arginine and antioxidant vitamins may reduce the risk of preeclampsia. Notably, the beneficial effect was greatest when supplementation was started prior to 24 weeks' gestation. Antioxidant vitamin supplementation alone did not protect against preeclampsia. More studies performed on low-risk populations are needed. [26]
