Severe COVID-19 may be associated with dyspnea, hypoxia, or greater than 50% lung involvement on imaging. Critical COVID-19 may be associated with respiratory failure, shock, or multiorgan system dysfunction.

Complications may include pneumonia, hypoxemic respiratory failure/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and septic shock, cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia, acute kidney injury (AKI), and complications of prolonged hospitalization, including secondary bacterial infections, thromboembolism, gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, and polyneuropathy/myopathy.
