Which findings suggest type 4 renal tubular acidosis (RTA)?

The following findings are typical of type 4 RTA:

  • Mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease (stages 2-3) in most patients, with a creatinine clearance of 30-60 mL/min

  • Hyperkalemia

  • Hypoaldosteronism

  • Diabetes mellitus (in approximately 50% of patients)
