The following equation helps to estimate an expected change in serum sodium (Na) with respect to characteristics of infusates used [35] : Change in serum Na = [(infusate Na + infusate K) - serum Na] / [Total body water +1]

During therapy, close monitoring of serum electrolytes (ie, every 2-4 h) to avoid overcorrection is essential.
