In order of frequency, hypocalcemia occurs in the following settings:

  • Chronic and acute renal failure

  • Vitamin D deficiency

  • Magnesium deficiency

  • Acute pancreatitis

  • Hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism

  • Infusion of phosphate, citrate, or calcium-free albumin
