Liver disease with decreased synthetic function can cause vitamin D deficiency from several sources, as follows:

  • Impaired 25-hydroxylation of vitamin D

  • Decreased bile salts with malabsorption of vitamin D

  • Decreased synthesis of vitamin D–binding protein

  • Other factors
