Answer

A study by Toyonaga and Kikura of 206 patients indicated that hyperchloremic acidosis is a precursor to the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) following abdominal surgery. The study found that a postoperative base excess-chloride level of less than -7 mEq/L was an independent risk factor for AKI and suggested that the AKI risk being can be reduced by decreasing the intraoperative chloride ion load in fluids.
