As many as 50% of patients with pneumococcal meningitis also have evidence of pneumonia on initial chest radiography. This association occurs in fewer than 10% of patients with meningitis caused by H influenzae or N meningitidis and in approximately 20% of patients with meningitis caused by other organisms.
