Patients with the following conditions are at increased risk for S pneumoniae meningitis:

  • Hyposplenism

  • Hypogammaglobulinemia

  • Multiple myeloma

  • Glucocorticoid treatment

  • Defective complement (C1-C4)

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • Renal insufficiency

  • Alcoholism

  • Malnutrition

  • Chronic liver disease
