Conditions that may develop by direct extension of S pneumoniae from the nasopharynx include the following:

  • Conjunctivitis
  • Otitis media
  • Sinusitis
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB)
  • Pneumonia (which may be complicated by purulent pericarditis)
