Signs and symptoms of oral or pharyngeal dysphagia include the following:

  • Coughing or choking with swallowing

  • Difficulty initiating swallowing

  • Food sticking in the throat

  • Sialorrhea

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Change in dietary habits

  • Recurrent pneumonia

  • Change in voice or speech (wet voice)

  • Nasal regurgitation
