How are Plasmodium species histologically distinguished?

Histologically, the various Plasmodium species causing malaria may be distinguished by the following:

  • Presence of early forms in peripheral blood

  • Multiply infected red blood cells

  • Age of infected RBCs

  • Schüffner dots

  • Other morphologic features
