Some data from animal studies suggest that the standard inactivated influenza vaccine may confer partial immunity toward avian influenza. [64] Accordingly, it has been recommended that poultry workers receive annual influenza vaccinations to prevent illness and to prevent viral reassortment through simultaneous infection with the 2 types of influenza. [65] Similarly, vaccination of swine workers against seasonal influenza may help prevent cross-species sharing of influenza viruses and the origination of novel reassortant viruses. [66]
