The autonomic nervous system is also involved in botulism, with manifestations that include the following:

  • Paralytic ileus advancing to severe constipation

  • Gastric dilatation

  • Bladder distention advancing to urinary retention

  • Orthostatic hypotension

  • Reduced salivation

  • Reduced lacrimation
