Shaffer and colleagues developed a system that can be used to determine prognosis in patients undergoing HLA-matched and -mismatched allogeneic HSCT for MDS. [36] In the system, the following risk factors are assigned 1 point:

  • Blood blasts >3%
  • Platelet count ≤50 × 10 9/L at transplantation
  • Karnofsky performance status < 90%
  • Comprehensive cytogenetic risk score of poor or very poor
  • Age 30 to 49 years
