According to the 2003 BCSH guidelines, a full blood count is required for all patients who are admitted to the hospital, with other investigations performed as necessitated by the clinical situation. Intravenous fluids are not routinely indicated, but should be given if the patient is unable to drink, has diarrhea or is vomiting. Nasogastric fluids are an appropriate alternative to IV fluids.
