Pulmonary hypertension increasingly recognized as a serious complication of sickle cell disease, with an incidence as high as 31.8%. [35, 36] Familial clustering has also been recognized. Hemolysis, chronic hypoxia caused by sickle cell disease, and pulmonary disease (eg, recurrent acute chest syndrome, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea) are contributing factors.
