Data for European studies indicate the same frequencies for protein S deficiency as in the United States. In contrast, the prevalence of protein S deficiency is particularly high in the Japanese population, with a frequency of approximately 12.7% in patients with VTE and approximately 0.48%-0.63% in the general population. [16] In a Japanese study that evaluated patients with VTE for congenital thrombophilia, Ikejiri et al diagnosed congenital protein S deficiency in eight of 130 patients (6.2%). [17]
