Answer

In an observational study of acute porphyrias that included 90 patients with acute intermittent porphyria, Bonkovsky et al found that the diagnosis was delayed by a mean of 15 years. Many of the patients underwent appendectomies or cholecystectomies before their porphyria was diagnosed. [8]
