Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, which results in the production of fragmented erythrocytes (schistocytes), may be caused by any of the following [27, 28] :

  • Defective prosthetic cardiac valves
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)
  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
