Complications of DIC include the following:

  • Acute kidney injury
  • Change in mental status
  • Respiratory dysfunction
  • Hepatic dysfunction
  • Life-threatening thrombosis and hemorrhage (in patients with moderately severe–to–severe DIC)
  • Cardiac tamponade
  • Hemothorax
  • Intracerebral hematoma
  • Gangrene and loss of digits
  • Shock
  • Death
