Poor-prognosis characteristics include the following clinical and laboratory factors:

  • Older age

  • Symptomatic presentation

  • Poor performance status

  • African-American descent

  • Hepatomegaly

  • Splenomegaly

  • Negative Philadelphia chromosome or BCR/ABL

  • Anemia

  • Thrombocytopenia

  • Thrombocytosis

  • Decreased megakaryocytes

  • Basophilia

  • Myelofibrosis (increased reticulin or collagen)
