A combined prognostic model, incorporating previous models such as the Sokal score, has been devised using the number of poor-prognosis characteristics. Stages in this model are as follows:

  • Stage 1: 0 or 1 characteristic

  • Stage 2: 2 characteristics

  • Stage 3: 3 or more characteristics

  • Stage 4:  blast phase at diagnosis
