Non-renal etiologies of flank pain are usually local processes that result in inflammation or nerve irritation. Common causes include the following:

  • Musculoskeletal strain
  • Musculoskeletal contusion
  • Dermatologic conditions
  • Neurologic conditions
  • Compression from local growth of a mass
  • Referred pain from thoracic pathologies
