Several mechanisms have been suggested as the possible cause of accelerated vascular disease, including the following:

  • Endothelial cell damage

  • Smooth muscle cell proliferation

  • Lipid peroxidation

  • Upregulation of prothrombotic factors (XII and V)

  • Downregulation of antithrombotic factors or endothelial-derived nitric oxide
