Risk factors for torsade include the following:

  • Congenital long QT syndrome

  • Female gender

  • Acquired long QT syndrome (causes of which include medications and electrolyte disorders such as hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia)

  • Bradycardia

  • Baseline electrocardiographic abnormalities

  • Renal or liver failure
