Acute DVT may be treated in an outpatient setting with LMWH. Patients with low-risk PE may be safely discharged early from hospital or receive only outpatient treatment with LMWH, followed by vitamin K antagonists, although nonvitamin K-dependent oral anticoagulants may be as effective but safer than the LMWH/vitamin K antagonist regimen.
