In view of the high mortality in this population (nearly 50%), [56] it is important that antibiotic treatment of wound infection or secondary bacteremia provide the appropriate spectrum of coverage specific to the offending organisms. Because indiscriminate use of antibiotics leads to resistant organisms and because the specific drugs of choice and antimicrobial agents change rapidly, management of these complex problems may be facilitated by consulting an infectious disease specialist.
