Laparoscopic nephrectomy (LN) was first performed by Clayman et al in 1991 and has since become a standard therapy for various renal lesions. [1] LN may be performed by a transperitoneal or retroperitoneal approach for the treatment of both benign and malignant conditions. This article describes the retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy (RLN) technique, the advantages to this approach, relevant anatomy, special instrumentation requirements, and the current literature on this subject.
