Catheterization and venography can clearly delineate the nature and severity of an obstruction. Occasionally, therapeutic interventions can be undertaken at the same time, including balloon angioplasty, localized thrombolysis, and the placement of a stent or transjugular intrahepatic portacaval shunt (TIPS).
