Hepatic dysfunction is the presenting feature in more than half of patients. Although the condition may manifest as acute hepatitis, the three major patterns of hepatic involvement are as follows:

  • Chronic active hepatitis

  • Cirrhosis (the most common initial presentation)

  • Fulminant hepatic failure
