PTC or PTHC offers the following advantages:

  • Successful in most cases of biliary obstruction

  • Allows treatment of obstruction by stone extraction, balloon-dilation of strictures, or stent placement

  • Permits biopsies or brush cytology

  • Provides excellent visualization of the bile ducts
