Crohn disease is believed to be the result of an imbalance between proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators. Although genetic susceptibility, luminal antigenic drive, and environmental triggers are also important factors, animal models demonstrate that no single factor is sufficient to induce intestinal inflammation.
