Patients with impaired host defense mechanisms are at greatly increased risk for sepsis. The main causes of impaired host defense are as follows:

  • Chemotherapeutic drugs

  • Malignancy

  • Severe trauma

  • Burns

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • Renal or hepatic failure

  • Advanced age
