The effectiveness of brief interventions for heavier drinkers and in the acute care setting is unknown. Chronic, severe alcohol dependence is frequently resistant to existing methods of interventions, but pharmacotherapy with brief medical management counseling may reduce heavy drinking in these alcohol-dependent persons.
