Multiple large, randomized, secondary prevention trials, including the Heart Protection Study, have demonstrated significant mortality benefit from statin therapy in patients with unstable angina.

Results from the MIRACL (Myocardial Ischemia Reduction with Aggressive Cholesterol Lowering) study and the PROVE-IT (Pravastatin or Atorvastatin Evaluation and Infection Therapy (PROVE-IT) TIMI trials suggested that early initiation of antilipidemic agents (statins) in patients with ACS can decrease adverse events within a relatively short term.
