The presence of diabetes mellitus, in and of itself, does not confer sufficient risk to warrant prophylactic cholecystectomy in asymptomatic individuals. It should be kept in mind, however, that acute cholecystitis in a patient with diabetes is associated with a significantly higher frequency of infectious complications, such as sepsis.
