What is the importance of specific training in performing totally extraperitoneal (TEP) laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair?

Before independently performing a TEP repair, surgeons should receive specific training in the technique. [92] Sound laparoscopic skills provide a solid foundation, but mentoring in the technique leads to improved outcomes. Mentoring is most valuable with regard to gaining familiarity with the preperitoneal anatomy and its variations. A complete TEP procedure is shown in the video below.

Variations of TEP repair that use only one port have been described; some promising results have been obtained, but further study is required. [93, 94]
