Removal of pericardial fluid is the definitive therapy for tamponade and can be done using the following three methods:

  • Emergency subxiphoid percutaneous drainage

  • Pericardiocentesis (with or without echocardiographic guidance)

  • Percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy
