Studies focusing on trigeminal nerve alterations have found both hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity as well as large and small fiber neuropathy. [14, 8, 7, 15] These studies suggest that burning mouth syndrome (BMS) may have multiple etiologies producing similar symptoms.
